Marlee Paton named in Final 25 nominees for 2012 Tewaaraton Award
Marlee leads the Greyhounds with 37 goals, 28 assists and 65 points, ranking in the top five of the BIG EAST in each of the categories. She has tallied six hat tricks this year and dished out multiple assists on seven occassions.
Twenty five women and twenty five men were selected as nominees, from which the 12th Annual Tewaaraton Award finalists (5 women, 5 men) will be selected and honoured on May 31, 2012, at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. The original men's and women's watch lists were announced on February 15 with additions made on March 20 and April 3 and were ultimately comprised of 82 men's players and 52 women's players.

As a club we are always looking to raise funds to help us get better equipment, uniforms, events etc. and we have decided to run a Cadbury Chocolate Drive.
We are asking each family to purchase one box of chocolates which is $50.00 (or you can certainly purchase more if you think you can sell them!) - you will need to purchase the box first by internet transfer or money to Jaci White. (Internet transfer preferable) then SELL SELL SELL!

2011 Lacrosse Victoria Presentation Night
Following another successful season at Newport Ladies Lacrosse Club this year, we were once another well- represented in the Lacrosse Victorian 2011 Season Awards...
In B Grade, Kelly Sedgeway came 4th in the Best & Fairest award, finishing the season 2nd in the B Grade competition with 45 goals and 8 assists, including a season high 6 goals against Melbourne University in August. The winner of the 2011 award was Altona's Shana Kukucka who lead the B Grade compeition with 49 goals and 11 assists. Congratulations Kelly on a fabulous season!
Jason Simpson, our State League coach this year, was nominated for Coach of the Year, with the accolade being awarded to Glenn Meredith of Malvern Lacrosse Club for his work with the Senior Victorian Men's Team and their unprecidented 5th consecutive National Championship. Congratulations to Jason on this well- deserved recognition of his efforts and success in transforming a team who lost their first game to Footscray by 9 goals, to then defeat them mid-season by 10, and most importantly, winning the 2011 State League Premiership!
In State League, Hayley Sofarnos was the winner of the 2011 Jeannie Matthews Trophy. Hayley lead the competition with 49 goals and 17 assists, including a season high 6 goals against Altona/ Caulfield in April. Last year's winner, Rachel Kirchheimer, finishing 1 vote behind even though she missed 5 games this season. Rachel finished the season with 26 points, off 16 goals and 10 assists. To round of our dominance in State League for Season 2011, Lyndsey Paton finished 4th, capping off a dominant season recording 44 goals and 8 assists as the 2nd highest goal scorer in the competition.

FUN FACT: Newport has won the 12 of the last 15 State League Jeannie Matthews Best & Fairest Awards, as well as 6 Premierships in the last 8 years!
2011 Under 15 National Tournament
For the 7th time in the tournament's 9 year history, Victoria claimed the title. Ice defeated SA Lightning 12-7 in the Championship Game to re-claim the Fiona Clark Tropy for the second consecutive year. Congratulations to Sharni Brady, Hannah Walker and Katie- Jane Clark...
Fire had a tough start to the week, dropping their first three games by the smallest of margins... The rallied to win their final two games and ended up finishing the week 5th... Congratulations to Ellen McGuirk and Tori Naylor for their performances during the week.
Head Coach Sue Sofarnos, along with Team Coaches Hayley Sofarnos and Nella Lane (Footscray) coached both teams throughout the tournament, doubling their usual tournament work load, however found it to be extremely beneifical to the Squad and comraderie of the Victorian teams.
Congratulations once again to everyone who was involved in another hugely successful output by the Victorian juniors!

2011 Premiers!!
This year we will had 3 teams competing for a 2011 Premiership - Under 17s, B Grade and State League!
Our Under 17 girls played Footscray... Although they played with huge heart and fought gallantly, they lost 6-14. The goal scorers for the day were Loren Naylor and Alysha Barlow with 2 goals apiece and Kaela Glasbrenner and Elise Hussey with 1 goal each.
B Grade were crowned Premiers for the 13th time after defeating Surrey Park 11-6. Although the game was quite close throughout the first half, Newport pulled away in the second, out scoring Surrey Park 8-4. Loren Naylor, Kelly Sedgeway and Hannah Walker led the team with hat tricks, along with singles from Margaret Barlow and Vanessa Riolo, supported by Madeline van Wayenburg who had a great game in the cage!
In the final game of the day, State League were victorious for the second straight year, claiming their 6th premiership in 8 years and increasing their Premiership tally to an unprecedented 21! As expected, the 2011 State League Grand Final was going to be a nailbiter... Newport went out to an early 2-0 lead, while man down, then Footscray went on a 4 goal run, to lead 4-2... During the first half Newport played a total of 6 minutes but managed to stay with Footscray and went into half time with a 6-6 tie. Newport again drew first blood in the second half and never looked back, claiming a 10-8 victory. Lyndsey Paton lead the team with 4 goals, Hayley Sofarnos had a hat trick, Elise Hussey slotted away 2 ripper outside shots and Grand Final MVP, Steph McNamara, had 1.

2011 Grand Final Day
This year we will have 3 teams competing for a 2011 Premiership - Under 17s, B Grade and State League!
Our Under 17 girls convincingly defeated Williamstown 17-8 on Sunday afternoon... They will meet Footscray in the Final... Good Luck girls!
B Grade were also victorious, defeating Altona in an extremely physical match 11-4... They will now play Surrey Park on Grand Final day in the quest for their 13th Premiership!
For the 37th consecutive year, our State League team has made it through to the Grand Final!!! They beat Williamstown 8-6 in a hard fought game on Sunday afternoon... They will now face Footscray in the Grand Final, hoping to win back-to-back premierships and win an unprecidented 21st State League Premiership...
Also, a HUGE congratulations to our Under 13 and Under 15 teams on a successful season... The Under 13s fell to Williamstown in the Preliminary Final on Sunday 1-5, and the Under 15s lost galantly in overtime in last weekend's Semi Final, also to Williamstown... Both teams had a fabulous season and improved out of sight... Congratulations girls!

Australia put up a gallant fight against the US in the Gold Medal game on Saturday night... Danelle Mollison (Footscray) led all scorers with 5 goals, while the Aussies fell 11-14... The 3 goal deficit if the smallest margin of loss since Australia won the title in 1995... We are all so proud of the amazing effort this Australian team put forward! GO AUSSIES!
